STUDENT REFLECTIONS

LAUGHTER--AN OCCULT POWER

OF THE MANY powers possessed by man, the power to laugh is the most beneficent of all. It is truly an occult power and one could say a gift of the gods to mortals, without which, one could think, man would have perished from the earth a long time ago. Thinking of man's task in this evolutionary cycle, there are times when it seems that Karmic effects accumulate faster than we can deal with them. If we can, at that point, sit down and just laugh about our situation, the pressure is miraculously released -- and like a safety valve, whose function it is to release accumulated pressure, we are able to start afresh and devise ways of dealing with problems.

The "gods" who set manifestation in motion must have had such an idea in mind when it is said that when they set this planet spinning in space, they laughed to see it roll.

Every child born in this world brings its bona fides with it. When the babe first smiles, we know a human soul is now on the scene. Who is not thrilled and delighted to witness a babe's first smile? The happy, carefree laughter of children delights everyone, helping more somber souls to rise to another level of life and living. The power to laugh and smile is a uniquely human characteristic.

It is said that H.P.B. had a joyous laugh, and who among us had less to laugh about than she? In letters written after her death, many noted her capacity for mirth, her outgoing nature. And, this even under circumstances which would have crushed the average mortal. Even with all the onslaughts being thrown upon her, she was still able to laugh about many things from the sheer ridiculousness of the charges. Mr. Judge was also said to have a wonderful sense of humor and that children naturally gravitated to him. When two strangers meet, a smile immediately establishes a bond of unity and like an ambassador of good will, makes possible a meaningful relationship. Mr. Judge's frequently quoted statement that "It is a contest of smiles if we really know our business" is well worth endeavoring to understand in its occult significance, and affirms the following from The Bhagavad-Gita:

I am the origin of all; all things proceed from me; believing me to be thus, the wise gifted with spiritual wisdom worship me; their very hearts and minds are in me; enlightening one another ... they are full of enjoyment and satisfaction. (p. 71.)

SANJAYA:

And as I again and again remember, O mighty king, this wonderful sacred dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna, I am delighted again and again. Also, as I recall to my memory the wonderful form of Hari [one of the forms of Krishna] the Lord, my astonishment is great, O king, and I rejoice again and again. (p. 133.)

Making light of our own difficulties, yet ever maintaining a sympathy toward those of others is participating, in miniature, upon the Path enjoined by all the Teachers of humanity. After all, as they say in the world of entertainment, "The show must go on." If the show and the cycles move on in spite of us, we may as well develop a sense of laughter and happiness while we accompany the performance. This unseen presence of attitude surely will have an occult influence from behind the stage of life's daily events.

COMPILER'S NOTE: The following is a separate item which followed the above article but was on the same page. I felt it was useful to include it here:

Just get rid
Of that small mind
That is called self,
And there is nothing in the universe
That can harm or hinder you.

How delightful it is
To make all space
Our dwelling-place!
Our hearts and minds
Are perfectly at ease.
